The use of a decanter is to oxygenate the wine and allow the subtle notes to be released. This changes the overall taste of the wine. It doesn't seem to make sense that the simple transfer of wine from a bottle to another vessel would make a difference, and wine enthusiasts have spent hours debating whether the procedure is of any real advantage, however, most connoisseurs agree that wine tasting is enhanced especially for fine aged red wine.
